Tommy Stanley, U.S. Navy

color:black;">Petty Officer Third Class Tommy Stanley was born in Kirbyville, Texas, and has a musical talent that has followed him his whole life. He's a singer-songwriter currently serving in United States Navy. He served on the USS Kitty Hawk as a Mechanics Mate until 2008, when he was assigned to Headquarters Navy Office of Information in Millington, Tenn. After attending the Navy School of Music, he has now reclassified to MU Navy Musician and is stationed with the Navy Band North East in Newport, Rhode Island.

color:black;">He was a top 10 contestant on NBC's Nashville Star program, where he was a stellar example of our military excellence and a well-loved and respected cast member, both for his service and the inherent professionalism that he conveyed. For Tommy, Nashville Star wasn't just about being on television. Tommy was selected from 1,500 service members who auditioned on the USS Iwo Jima and after being cast as one of Nashville Star’s top 12 competitors, Tommy took on the task of representing military talent on national television.

color:black;">Armed with the knowledge that he gained from his Nashville Star mentor—Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Jewel, and with a great support team, Tommy is poised to continue to be a gleaming example of the excellence that exists in our armed forces.

color:black;">In addition to being a Navy musician, Tommy has selflessly dedicated his time to The Center for Military Music Opportunities (C*A*M*M*O) to perform in many events that have honored and supported his fellow service members and veterans and has often moved civic leaders and government leaders to give support to our military.

color:black;">Most recently, Tommy lent his talents to the support of Wounded Warriors by representing C*A*M*M*O at the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s Tailgate Party for Wounded Warriors at Fort Myer, Va. He also performed for the troops at Ft. Irwin, Calif., and Camp LeJeune, N.C.

color:black;">He has produced an album of self-written and recorded songs that organically chronicle his life as a sailor, featuring active duty and veteran musicians and has signed with C*A*M*M*O as a recording artist.

Walt Sideswas born in Mustang, Okla., in 1939. He and a buddy joined the Marine Corps together in January 1956 and by the time he turned 17 the following December, Walt had nearly a year in the Marines under his belt.

After his hitch in the service, he headed to the University of Oklahoma and played tight end for the Sooners before heading back to the Marines, where he became a competition marksman. He then led a scout-sniper platoon in Vietnam. Their exploits were chronicled in the book “Dead Center: A Marine Sniper's Two-Year Odyssey in the Vietnam War,” by Ed Kugler.

Walt served two combat tours in Vietnam and retired from the Marine Corps as a 1^st Sgt in 1977. In 1983, he met Sgt. Major John Holland and began working on the POW/MIA issue. In 1987, prompted by fellow veteran Ray Manzo’s idea to have a motorcycle “Demonstration Run” during Memorial Day weekend in Washington, DC. The three men, along with veteran Staff Sgt. Ted Sampley, worked together and became the "founding fathers" of the Rolling Thunder First Amendment Demonstration Run,an annual ride and gathering that has taken place since 1988.

Riders from around the nation, and even around the world, make their way to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. It is an opportunity to meet, exchange information, plan, celebrate brothers and sisters in arms and focus national media attention on their plight.

The Run was formed to bring awareness to the POW/MIA issue and since the first Rolling Thunder, it has grown into the world’s largest single-day motorcycle event. As Rolling Thunder celebrates the 25^th anniversary of the Run in 2012, Walt Sides continues to work on the POW/MIA issue and serves as the Executive Director of Rolling Thunder Washington, DC Inc.

VOLUNTEER

We need volunteers to help with a variety of tasks in connection with the May 26 C*A*M*M*O Tribute to Rolling Thunder XXV, ranging from assistance with stage setup and breakdown, to sound/lighting/cameras and security. While we’ll have professionals on site to handle some of the major tasks, we still need an army of volunteers to make our event successful. If you are interested and have experience/skill in one or more of the areas listed below, we need you!

Duration for each job varies; for example, if you’re helping with the stage setup, we’ll need you starting late Thursday afternoon, May 24, until the stage is built, and then again between 6 p.m. and midnight on Saturday, May 26.

Security: Handle crowd control, ensure safety of speakers, musicians, monitor materiel (water, supplies, etc.)

Engineer: Assist with sound, lighting, cameras

Stagehand: General lifting, moving, putting up and taking down perimeter fencing, etc.

Floater: Miscellaneous tasks as required (non-lifting)
